About the Job
Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the Senior Executive Assistant and Board Liaison (Senior Executive Assistant to President and CEO) serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external constituencies on all matters pertaining to the Office of the President. The Sr. Executive Assistant/Liaison serves to enhance the CEO’s effectiveness by providing necessary executive support. The Sr. Executive Assistant/Liaison manages the CEO’s schedule, ensuring that her time is spent on matters of highest priority; serves as a liaison to the board of directors and executive team; organizes and coordinates CEO outreach and external relations efforts; supports the fundraising team; and oversees special projects.
The Sr. Executive Assistant/Liaison must be strategic, creative, and enjoy working with a growing organization that is driven by mission, values, and results. This position requires the utmost professionalism in dealing with funders, board members, and other critical relationships for the Institute. The Sr. Executive Assistant/Liaison will have access to confidential information and must operate with great discretion. The Sr. Executive Assistant/Liaison must be consistent, well-organized, efficient, and mindful of their external/ambassadorial role and have a customer-service oriented mindset.
Responsibilities
Scheduling and Administrative Duties:
Manage the CEO’s calendar to ensure that priorities are properly elevated and that key relationships are stewarded. This will involve coordinating with multiple internal stakeholders, especially executive team members, and helping to enforce standards and decisions about calendar priorities
Schedule meetings, speaking engagements, and travel to efficiently manage the CEO’s time
Ensure CEO is prepared for internal and external meetings, including coordinating briefing materials and agendas
Staff CEO at select meetings, including taking notes and helping ensure internal communication and follow-up
Draft and edit emails, documents, and presentations
Handle administrative work for the CEO, including receipts, contracts, and other financial and operational paperwork
Board Liaison:
Serve as main point of contact for managing, facilitating, and coordinating logistics for all (c)(3) and (c)(4) Board–related meetings and events, including the budget and board member reimbursements. This includes facilitating and scheduling all committee meetings
Serve as an administrative aide for the Board chair
With the CEO, other Roosevelt Institute/Forward executives, and the Board Chair, lead in preparation of Board materials for quarterly meetings
Take minutes and notes for all meetings, including committee meetings
With CEO, Governance and Nominating Committee chair, and Board chair, serve as key project manager for all new board member recruitment, onboarding, and orientation. In addition, serve as key project manager for any Board member retirement–related offboarding
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred
3–5 years relevant professional experience
Strong computer skills and experience with MS Office, Google suite of products, and social media web platforms; experience using Salesforce, Asana, or other database and project management tools a plus
Superior written and verbal communication skills

The Roosevelt Institute is hiring a Director, Tax Policy and Analysis to lead the organization’s work to build a more progressive tax code that rebalances power in our economy and democracy. The Director’s work will combine long-range strategy development, research and writing, spokesperson work, and day-to-day management. Their time will be divided roughly as follows: 40 percent personal research and writing; 30 percent managing fellows and contract authors; 20 percent promoting work of program; 10 percent administrative and management tasks (for example, supporting the development team). Included in the time devoted to research and writing and fellows management may be supporting research associates and program managers.
Reporting to the Principal Economist, the Director will partner with team members and leaders across the organization to develop, refine, and execute program strategy. The Director will also serve as Roosevelt’s primary subject matter expert on tax and budget policy—driving strategy, serving as an internal resource for colleagues, and representing Roosevelt in the media, among advocacy groups, with funders, and with elected officials. Candidates with subject expertise in tax law, budget-focused legislation, public economics, or any combination of the three are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
Research and Writing:
Research and author reports and issue briefs as well as other products, including blog posts, articles, and op-eds
Engage with fellows, external partners, and outside experts in developing research
Program Strategy and Leadership:
Working with the Principal Economist and in conjunction with the government relations, development, and communications teams, develop a research agenda on tax policy, including identifying areas for new long-range thought leadership as well as for near-term policy change
Lead and help build a team of part-time fellows and contract experts, aligning them around program goals, overseeing research product development, and ensuring that the whole of the program’s work and products is greater than the sum of its parts
Partner with the Think Tank Director to guide research by junior staff in support of program goals
Where appropriate, represent the organization’s program work with press, government officials, funders, and allied organizations
Manage and review the research and writing of fellows, contractors, and staff to ensure quality and rigor across all projects as well as to assess the timeliness of projects as they relate to near-term opportunities and current events
Partner with the development team to articulate clear goals, strategies, and deliverables for proposals to support program work and to track and report out on progress
Management:
Oversee product pipeline for program area and ensure all products meet the highest research standards, are positioned to drive strategic outcomes, and are delivered on time
Qualifications
Advanced degree in law, economics, or other related degree strongly preferred
10 years of experience in tax and budget program strategies, policies, and analysis
Exceptional writing, editing, and communications skills
Experience writing and/or communicating about fiscal policy to a wide audience
Deep knowledge of at least one subfield and familiarity with the subfields of tax law, legislative budget process, public and/or macroeconomic policy
Demonstrated success managing researchers across topics—including balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders and priorities (e.g., academic and research experts, advocacy and media goals) and ensuring timely delivery of projects
Experience collaborating with teams across an organization to develop and execute program strategies, as well as troubleshooting and course-correcting as needed

The Roosevelt Institute is hiring a Director, Strategic Initiatives to help lead government relations (GR) and communications strategy from within the think tank. The Director, Strategic Initiatives will work closely with subject-area experts to help them develop work plans that are responsive to changing political conditions, identify and take advantage of policy windows, and defend progressive policy priorities. They will serve as an essential connector between the think tank and Roosevelt’s external relations team.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Think Tank, the Director’s work will combine long-range strategy development, spokesperson work, writing, and occasional research. They will support the strategic translation and positioning of think tank work for different audiences, especially policymakers, through fact sheets, op-eds, and other written products. Additionally, they will be responsible for managing Roosevelt’s weekly c4 newsletter, Fireside Stacks, which offers weekly commentary on progressive politics, policy, and economics.
Responsibilities
Strategy:
Work with subject matter experts in the think tank to develop strategy to ensure relevance of written products and events for GR purposes
Serve as liaison between think tank and external relations team (currently consisting of GR and communications/media) to drive internal understanding of products, strategic releases, and external deployments of products
Plan policy events and convenings
Contribute to the efforts of Roosevelt Forward, Roosevelt Institute’s sister organization, as needed
External Engagement:
Project manage and author Roosevelt Forward’s weekly newsletter, Fireside Stacks
Represent the team’s research and ideas to the media and other stakeholders by presenting at press briefings, engaging lawmakers, speaking with reporters, and engaging in conversations on social media
Partner with the development team to write funder pitches; make grant management plans, including outcomes and deliverables; and report on grants
On occasion, represent the think tank in person and virtually at convenings of funders and other thought partners
Research and Writing:
Author fact sheets and other products translating think tank reports and briefs for GR and communications audiences
Ghost-write content for organization leaders (such as the CEO, VP Think Tank, and others) and fellows
Opportunities to research and author or co-author strategic policy reports, research papers, op-eds, articles, presentations, and other products, with the opportunity to develop an area of specialization while also working across issue areas
Research and develop strategy around exploratory lines of work
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree strongly preferred
Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in government or advocacy with a focus on economics or political economy
Demonstrated understanding of federal policymaking processes and how research is deployed in those processes
Demonstrated experience setting and implementing campaign strategy
Persuasive commitment to the Rooseveltian worldview and an understanding of what it means to do paradigm-shifting policy work
Top-notch written and verbal communication skills; a proven track record of writing clear, structured, and persuasive communications (e.g., reports, factsheets, talking points, policy memos, and briefs) with excellent attention to detail

About the Job
The CExRel will report to the Roosevelt Institute’s CEO, developing and executing strategies to ensure that Roosevelt’s actionable influence work is targeted and successful. Roosevelt’s worldview and people have won many victories. And, at the same time, the political landscape is shifting. We are at a hinge moment in history. New paradigm wins, on everything from antitrust to strengthening union power, are fragile. A CExRel at Roosevelt will lead the development of our external approach at this critical time, and be a public-facing principal making this case to Roosevelt’s many audiences.
The CExRel will oversee government affairs and advocacy as well as partner engagement. They will also ensure that traditional communications and owned media work are aligned with an overall external engagement approach. The Senior Vice President for Communications and her team will report to this new role, as will the Managing Director of Government Relations and the GR team.
The CExRel will have additional strategic and managerial duties with the Roosevelt Institute and serve as a member of the Roosevelt Institute executive team. The CExRel will also serve as a key advisor to Roosevelt Forward, the Institute’s sister organization and a 501(c)(4). The CExRel will manage all of Roosevelt’s external engagement efforts. They will collaborate closely with the VP of Research and Policy, the Chief Development Officer, and the CEO and serve as a public presence for both Roosevelt Institute and Roosevelt Forward in the media and at major conferences and events.
The ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated expertise in moving big ideas about the political economy into action. They will work with the Institute’s fellows and staff to engage federal policymakers in support of our vision of a nation where government plays an active role in creating a more democratic and equitable economy, and everyone enjoys a fair share of our collective prosperity.
The CExRel will work closely with the CEO and other executive leadership to develop strategies to engage policymakers and coalition partners to advance our work and ensure that it is actionable. They will lead a DC-based team focused on advocacy and relationship building, and will be responsible for the translation of Roosevelt papers and reports into compelling and timely advocacy materials. Alongside a strong communications team, the CExRel will be responsible for continuing to strengthen and broaden Roosevelt’s reputation with the full range of actors, including lawmakers and public officials, allies, and the media. Additionally, the CExRel will work with Roosevelt’s development team, which is responsible for our strong relationships with the philanthropic community.
The successful candidate will have expertise in the entire federal policymaking process, both legislative and executive. Strong relationships within the progressive political economy movement, including and especially the labor movement, will be important. They will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to serve as principal representing Roosevelt at meetings and other public events. And they will be very familiar with current and emergent progressive economic and public policy issues of our time.
Responsibilities
This role is responsible for three distinct but related areas:
Strategy development
The CExRel will lead the development of an external relations strategy by identifying key policy issues; identifying key audiences, especially public officials; and building and strengthening advocacy networks and partnerships. This requires understanding how to best utilize a variety of communications approaches, including media relations, social media, and events
Execution—turning ideas into action
The CExRel will lead an effective and coherent external engagement strategy.,This includes building and maintaining relationships with the media, partners, allies, and funders; representing Roosevelt in policy and organizing movement meetings as well as in government meetings, including with members of Congress and executive branch officials; supporting the translation of the Institute’s papers into policy proposals and analyzing public policy developments and trends; identifying opportunities for other Roosevelters to engage; and managing a team of DC-based government relations and partnership development staff
The CExRel will also oversee a 10-person communications team, which is led by an SVP Communications who will report to the CExRel. The comms team has primary responsibility for building and maintaining relationships with media and for managing social media, publications, events, and overall branding. Together, the government relations staff and comms staff will develop and execute an aligned strategy, which should have clear goals and measurable outcomes
This execution will require continual strengthening of efficient and effective processes that make the most of Roosevelt’s research, communications, and external engagement resources. Such process improvements will be the responsibility of the CExRel, the SVP Communications, and the VP of Research and Policy
Leading Roosevelt Forward
The CExRel will lead the strategy building for Roosevelt Forward, the 501(c)(4) sister organization associated with the Roosevelt Institute. This includes overseeing Roosevelt Forward’s appointments work, which places highly qualified candidates into senior-level federal government policy roles and other episodic or short-term work, which may include narrative research in Roosevelt’s core areas of expertise
The CExRel will serve as a key member of the organization’s executive team, which is responsible for all of Roosevelt’s management and managerial decision-making
Qualifications
15-plus years of increasing professional responsibilities and experience in relevant fields
Strategic acumen, with a demonstrated record of assessing a landscape and making narrative and policy change happen, in difficult as well as favorable external conditions
Track record of delivering results in shaping narrative and outcomes in the fast-moving political economy space
Experience working with policymakers, including key members of Congress and congressional committees, and with executive branch and other agency officials responsible for shaping economic outcomes
Strong, trusted existing relevant policy and movement relationships
Understanding of the relationship between elite and general public ideas organizing
Experience working with a range of policy communications and outreach tools, from elite media to social media to in-person gatherings
Fluency across fields and relationships—politics and elected officials, organizing and movement-building spaces, and academic and subject matter experts
Excellent managing ability with experience hiring and building a team
Creativity at the strategic and tactical levels—no idea too big, no detail too small—and the ability to leverage strong relationships to help a mid-sized organization punch above its weight
Excellent writing and presentation skills
Comfort serving as a principal and representing the organization in public meetings
Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to lead others in an organization that is necessarily responsive to changes in political and fundraising conditions
